Sustainability

Sustainability is a prime concern

When the Little Cayman Research Centre was built in 2004/2005, the blueprint included cutting edge sustainable designs by Doak Architecture, including composting toilets, waterless urinals, gray water gardens, a solar hot water in the sustainable bathhouse, solar lighting in the wet lab, and renewably-powered pumps, which are used where possible for small applications such as aquaria.

CCMI also has a 100,000 gallon cistern for fresh water and a roofing system that maximizes water collection.

Our new marine science and education facilities (2025) are being designed to address all energy, water, and waste considerations for a greener facility.

Our courses all include sustainable components, and we are designing a sustainable outreach programme to help the local community develop new and innovative ways to protect the ocean and earth’s precious resources for future generations.
