Internships

Internships at CCMI offer early career scientists and professionals the chance to gain hands-on experience and build practical skills within CCMI’s active field programmes in the Cayman Islands. Interns are guided by a dedicated team of scientists, educators, and operations staff.

Our internships

Internships are open to applicants aged 18 and older and take place at our Little Cayman Research Centre. Programmes typically range from 3 to 6 months, with availability varying each year based on project needs, available funding, and accommodation capacity.

Internship tracks

  • Marine Research
  • Marine Education
  • Communications & Outreach (Reefs Go Live)
  • Ocean Science Scholars (Caymanians and those with qualifying resident status)
  • Operations
  • Office Management

Eligibility and funding pathways:

International Internships: Open to applicants from around the world. Placement is dependent on current project needs and available funding.

Caymanian internships (Ocean Science Scholars): Funded through local scholarships, these placements are exclusively for residents of the Cayman Islands and offer full support to develop skills across any of the internship tracks listed above.

External funding: Applicants are welcome to apply with their own external funding or scholarships to support their participation in any internship track.

what the participants are saying

I am very grateful to have done this internship and meet the CCMI Staff, who were all lovely. I learnt valuable workplace lessons and got to enjoy all the aspects of marine biology, which I love. Thank you for this opportunity!

I think this internship was incredibly insightful into the working environment in the marine science field before heading off to university. Having the opportunity to be around educators and researchers in the same place was really fantastic because CCMI has both education and research together. The independence CCMI provide me outside of work life was really incredible and having the opportunity to live on a small island and explore it by bike was magical!

CCMI’s Ocean Scholar Marine Education Internship has been such an incredible experience for me. I have learned a great deal including completing my first aid training, boat skills, and many guided snorkel trips. This role has also provided me with a lot of personal growth experience, such as improving my public speaking, taking the lead and being part of an incredible team. It has been a real privilege working with the CCMI team and getting to know the local community. Not every day was easy but even on the most challenging days there were many high points, I have loved the challenge that each new day and each new group has brought. I have learned so much over the last 3 months and am certain this experience will benefit my future career. The only thing I don’t want to do is leave.
