Expedition Hope: Unexplored Seamounts of the Cayman Islands – part 2
This three-part Darwin+ funded, docuseries follows CCMI’s researchers and collaborative partners from Cayman Islands Department of Environment, Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the University of Delaware and Harbour Branch Oceanographic Institute, as they embark on an expedition to previously unexplored seamounts off the coast of the Cayman Islands.
Join the team as they overcome hurdles, setbacks, and harsh weather conditions to be the first explorers to document the underwater world of 12-Mile Bank and Pickle Bank seamounts.
These expeditions are crucial to understand the biodiversity of these remote systems and the hope for threatened corals that they could provide to inform future protection.
In part 2, we learn about the Explorer’s Club and the official exploration mission, but additional hold-ups and poor weather conditions stop the team from reaching Pickle Bank, the seamount 45-miles offshore from Little Cayman. Instead, the team divert their attention to 12-Mile Bank and redirect their research to adapt to their circumstances. In part 2, the team manage to get under the waves at 12-Mile Bank and begin their scientific research.
