Apply for Earthwatch’s Teen Team
There are a limited number of spaces available for the Earthwatch Institute Teen Team week, “Helping Endangered Coral in the Cayman Islands”, taking place at the CCMI Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC) this summer from June 23rd – 29th 2019.
The CCMI/Earthwatch partnership has been in place for 5 years, and this programme is an amazing opportunity for high school students (ages 13-18) to assist our research and education staff in conducting long-term data collection surrounding coral bleaching at a fully operational field station. Throughout the week, Earthwatch volunteers will collect data in the field and in the lab, whilst learning about the basic principles of tropical marine ecology, sustainability, and coastal zone management. The teen team volunteers are also able to receive community service credit for certain high school graduation requirements through activities such as coral nursery cleaning, beach clean-ups, and invasive species removal. Students are able to include their data in our CCMI long-term monitoring dataset spanning the past five years of coral bleaching collection for future publication.
