Brenda Griselda Gomez Carmarena
Brenda Griselda Gomez Carmarena is originally from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where her love for the natural world was nurtured through involvement in the Scouts movement. Her outdoor experiences with the Scouts fueled her curiosity, inspiring her to pursue a career in biology. Her hometown’s close connection to the sea led her toward marine science. During her final year of university, she specialized in marine ecology, conducting her thesis research on how El Niño and La Niña events influence sea urchin abundance in the coral reefs of Marietas Islands National Park.
After completing her degree, she taught Spanish and spent two years working in the hospitality industry in Canada, which strengthened her passion for teaching and engaging with people. In December 2024, Brenda participated in an internship with a whale research and whale-watching organization, learning about humpback whale ecology while educating tourists. Recently, she enrolled in an online environmental education diploma programme. She wants to grow her knowledge of marine life to inspire others to appreciate and protect marine ecosystems.
