How Does the Festival of Seas Make a Positive Impact?

Every year, generous donations support our operations by allowing us to offer life-changing scholarships, sustaining our innovative research projects, including:

  • Leading more than 200 local students in hands-on programmes at our research field station annually
  • Providing scholarships, robust education, training, and mentorship programmes for qualifying local students from government high schools
  • Engaging citizen scientists in impactful work throughout the year, including a group of disabled military veterans who are committed to diving to make a difference
  • Providing Reef Lecture Series on both Little Cayman and Grand Cayman to share our research with the public
  • Supporting students and researchers from around the world, who conduct research at our fully-equipped marine laboratory, with immediate access to vibrant marine ecosystems just outside our doors
  • Publishing over 100 scientific papers based upon research conducted through CCMI

For 20 years, the Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) has been a regional leader in research on coral reefs and educating the public about the vital role each person can play in protecting and preserving these natural resources. CCMI was launched in 1997, and we were officially incorporated as a non-profit in 1998, 20 years ago. Now, in the third International Year of the Reef, we reflect on where we have been and where we are going. Since our inception, CCMI has worked relentlessly to understand our coral reefs and the role humans have in protecting and conserving these natural resources for generations to come. Given that 70% of our coral reefs are under significant threat, our work is even more critical as we race against time to unlock the secrets of resiliency in the face of human impacts such as overfishing, climate change, and coral degradation.

To mark our 20th anniversary, we are introducing an awards ceremony, which allows CCMI the opportunity recognise and celebrate those who have supported and stood with us, inspired us, and provided us with the tools to carry out the important work we do in the Cayman Islands to improve our oceans’ health and positively impact our coral reefs. These awards will highlight the many contributions of various entities within our communities, all of which help CCMI realise our vision of ‘a world with vibrant oceans and healthy coral reefs.’
