Darwin Plus Caribbean Marine Ecology Camp 2023

April 2, 2024

Funded by the UK government through Darwin Plus, 14 students participated in CCMI’s week-long Caribbean Marine Ecology Camp (CMEC) in October 2023 during the October half-term break. During this residential experience at the Little Cayman Research Centre,, students learned about tropical marine ecology and conservation, learning directly from from CCMI scientists and educators. No two days were the same as campers snorkelled and explored the coral reef system of this remote island. During the camp, students also learned first-hand about CCMI’s cutting-edge research, adding to their knowledge about science and local environmental concerns. Campers gained a certificate of completion for attending the CMEC to add to their CVs as well as a real insight into the industry. In addition to the many hands-on learning opportunities, the CMEC also included fun activities such as beach games, kayaking, beach bonfires, and exploring Little Cayman’s environment. This programme helps CCMI support young Caymanian students by instilling a passion for protecting marine biodiversity in the Cayman Islands.
